  • OpenOffice - comes close to Microsoft's Office. A very nice feature is the ability to export to pdf.
  • Foxit Reader - a free reader for PDF (Portable Document Format) documents, much smaller then Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • PDFCreator - a free tool to create PDFs easily from nearly any application. With the PDFCreator Printer driver you turn any program into a PDF-machine.

  • Mozilla Firefox - Excellent browser.
  • True Download Manager - download manager/accelerator with good features like Pause/Resume downloads, simultaneous downloads, segmented downloads for acceleration.
  • Thunderbird - Email (and Usenet) client. I love the self learning spam filter.
  • FileZilla - (S)FTP client, very good. Similar to CuteFTP.
  • Wget - A free network utility to retrieve files from the World Wide Web (Windows version).
  • PuTTY - A Free Telnet/SSH Client

  • CCleaner - Crap cleaner, removes files that are just eating up disk space. Be careful, check all options, because some you might want to keep (for example cookies, Internet cache).
  • GnuWin32 - Provides Windows ports of tools with a GNU or similar open source license. In short, get yourself tools like: ls, tar, gzip, bzip2, rm, etc.
